Choosing a location is one of the most important decisions you will make when searching for the perfect new home. To ensure your family enjoys the best quality of life, you need to research everything from employment and education opportunities, to property values, health and proximity to the countryside.

At Stewart Milne Homes, we’ve taken some of the leg work out of hunting for the perfect location for you, and have tracked down some of the towns with the best quality of life in the UK.

Cove, Aberdeenshire

People living in Aberdeenshire already enjoy the best quality of life in Scotland, topping the Bank of Scotland quality of life survey this year for the fourth time. With the lowest population density in the UK (just 39 people per square kilometre) and more average sunshine per week than anywhere else in Scotland, Aberdeenshire is an enviable location with some incredible scenery. Residents of the region enjoy huge benefits from the rural location, with 93.3% of people reporting good health.

Recent research has put Cove at the top of the list of desirable places to live in the region. Cove enjoys a fantastic location, overlooking the breath taking North Sea coastline, and just minutes from bustling Aberdeen city centre.  Cove’s location affords it some excellent employment opportunities; on the outskirts of Aberdeen and close to Altens and Tullos Industrial estates. Earning potential in the area is excellent, and the average weekly earnings in the area are over 13% above the national average.

A crucial factor for choosing a home in any location is considering whether your home will retain its value. Cove has bucked the recent downturn in house prices, with property values rising by an incredible 108% between 2004 and 2012.

Newton Mearns, East Renfrewshire

This leafy suburb enjoys some of the best quality of life in the UK, with the East Renfrewshire region taking third place in the Bank of Scotland survey. Newton Mearns is known as a particularly affluent area with excellent employment opportunities, and residents reported the highest average weekly earnings in Scotland in 2012. Choosing Newton Mearns means access to excellent local facilities, a healthier lifestyle, and excellent employment, education and lifestyle opportunities for the whole family.

Where Newton Mearns truly shines is in education, and the town benefits from some of the best schools in Scotland. East Renfrewshire topped the Scottish State Schools league tables for students sitting Higher exams; the most important level of education for acceptance into the best universities. With four acclaimed universities within commuting distance (University of Glasgow, Strathclyde University, Glasgow Caledonian University and the University of the West of Scotland) young people have access to an unrivalled variety of further education opportunities.

Middlewich, Cheshire

Choosing a new home in Cheshire is likely to result in smiles – with recent research highlighting that 3 of the top 10 happiest places in the UK are located in the region.  Rightmove’s Happy at Home Index also found that Stockport, just a few miles from Middlewich, is the 2nd happiest place in the UK. Middlewich itself is an in-demand location for new homes, and the population of this charming town has doubled since 1970.

Historically, Middlewich was a manufacturing town, with the majority of local people employed in salt and textiles, but thanks to a recent boom in popularity – thanks to events like the annual Middlewich Folk and Boat festival – the town has reinvented itself as a prosperous and thriving tourist town. Unemployment is a third lower than the national average, and the town is only a 45 minute commute to the major cities of Manchester and Liverpool.

Surrounded by idyllic countryside, and intersected by canals, Middlewich is a great location for outdoor pursuits and leisure – all contributing to excellent health and well-being. Education standards are also high, with the town’s Middlewich High School attaining a Distinction in the latest OFSTED report, and enjoying small class sizes and excellent GSCE results.

At Stewart Milne Homes, we know that the location of your new home is just as important as the home itself; that’s why we carefully choose the locations of our developments for the best possible quality of life.
