When moving to a new home, you have the perfect blank canvas to create a fun and truly practical space for the kids. Your child’s bedroom isn’t just the place they sleep, it’s their craft space, play area, social club, secret hideaway and – once they start school – their study space.

Follow our top tips for decorating children’s bedrooms you can create a playful space that serves all of these important purposes and more.

Get the kids involved

When you’re planning out the room space, make it a fun activity the kids can get involved with so they immediately feel comfortable in their new surroundings. Give them input into the colours they’ll see in the new room, and show them some of the fun accessories they can choose to make the space feel like their own.

Another tip is to get some crayons out and draw the new room with them, to let them see their fun and exciting new haven before they move in. Show them what their new room will look like and – most importantly – where all their favourite toys will live.

Create a space that will grow and change with them

Your child might be obsessed with Disney right now but in two or three years’ time they will probably decide they’re far too grown-up for Mickey Mouse and his friends, so keep this in mind before committing to a theme.

Keep walls and floor coverings neutral to save you re-painting or wallpapering the room as they grow up. A neutral base lets you customise your child’s room as quickly as their tastes change with new bedding and fun accessories from cosy cushions to bright bunting.

Choose furniture that has been built to last

The furniture in children’s rooms will see a lot of rough and tumble, so it needs to be tough. For staple items like beds, wardrobes and desks, invest in sturdy, solid, high quality items that will last for years instead of cheaper items that will need to be replaced frequently.

Remember to choose plain furniture in classic styles with versatile wood or white stains that will go with any theme or colour scheme. Look for items with clever hidden storage, like beds with drawers in the base, or an under-bed truckle so they can invite friends over for sleepovers.

Make it a safe space to play

You can prevent furniture from toppling over by securing any free-standing items like drawers and wardrobes to the wall with simple brackets. Tidy away any dangling cords and wires to make sure your little ones won’t pull on them, and don’t hang heavy objects like large mirrors on the walls.

All Stewart Milne Homes come with practical safety features such as window locks to give you peace of mind while the little ones play.
